First Impressions

“Wow, that’s cool” was the first reaction around GearGuide when we received our sample Modify Watch. Three straps – black, blue and khaki – along with a single face and a boat load of multicolored strap keepers. We pulled the face out of its little container, slid it into the blue band (sorta like putting one of those silicone cases on an iPod), pimped it out with two keepers and away bounced our newly stylish tester.

Features

Modify Watch is not your typical watch company. As the name suggests, they’re about customization. And if the company gets their way, it will be customization en masse. You see, today the company offers the opportunity for people to pick from a few dozen watch faces and match them with a similar number of bands for a personal look. Going forward – should their Kickstarter campaign be successful – you’ll be able to put anything on a Modify Watch face for a completely, 100% unique and one-of-a-kind product. “Awesome” says our tester.

Specs
Face: Polycarbonate and stainless steel
Strap: Silicone
Weight: 1.5 oz

These days, Modify Watches come in two sizes, Classic and the slightly smaller Sport. I believe our sample was a Sport-sized version with a face roughly one-inch square. Unfortunately, there’s nothing on the Modify Watch website that clearly defines the differences in the two sizes, just that one’s bigger. Hey, Modify, help a guy out with a few specs please.

Speaking of specs, let’s be clear, these watches are not like those typically featured on GearGuide. They are clearly fashion items. The movements are made in China from plastic and stainless steel. The company claims they’re water resistant (which means get them wet at your own risk). And the batteries are not replaceable. Once the movement dies, you’ll need to purchase another which costs between $20 and $30. Straps run from $10 to $20.

Fit

The Modify Watch constructs their watch bands from flexible silicone. The fit is excellent and very comfortable. No shortage of notches to customize the watch’s wrap around the wrist.

Final Verdict

As a fashion item, it’s clear, Modify Watch has a current hit. And with a little more backing on Kickstarter, they’ll be able to kick things up another notch or two with the completely personalized version. We dig the concept and like the current product so if you’re in the market for a new casual watch, check them out at modifywatches.com.
