First Impressions

In a pouch the size of an emergency blanket’s – that’s how the Sierra Designs Summit Sack arrived at GearGuide. Open the pouch and out pours a full-size daypack with just about everything you’d expect from such a product, and then some. We immediately liked the deep red color of the pack along with the more vibrant red accents.

Features

Starting at the top, the Summit Sack comes without any structure at all. Sierra Design uses no aluminum stay, spring steel frame or rigid back panel. Much like the Outdoor Research Dry Peak Bagger, the Summit Sack is designed for stripped down runs up the mountain.

The Summit Sack weighs in at three ounces heavier than the Dry Peak Bagger and you get a few more features for that modest weight penalty. The bag opening closes tight with hook and loop. The interior includes two major compartments, one for gear, the other for a hydration bladder. The interior is also where you’ll find that pouch the Summit Sack comes in. It doubles as an accessory pocket and is large enough for a mobile phone, GPS device, car keys and wallet.

On the exterior of the Summit Sack, Sierra Designs locates an additional zippered pocket large enough for gloves, hat and other mid-size gear. Also on the rear of the pack are two sets of full-length daisy chain loops.

The suspension system is solid. In addition to the shoulder straps, Sierra Designs includes a web waist belt for distributing the load. There’ a sternum strap, the buckle of which includes a built-in survival whistle. The back panel and shoulder straps are ventilated.

Fit

Fit of the Sierra Designs Summit Sack just works. There’s nothing untoward about the simple shoulder-strap adjustments. And the waist belt is a nice addition.

Final Verdict

Sierra Designs delivers an excellent roll-top daypack in the Summit Sack. The details are well thought out and the number of features – including the hydration compatibility, ventilated panels, daisy chaining and pockets – make the Summit Sack stand out. Nicely done Sierra Designs.
